and

heritage

The cultural heritage assessment of the site revealed the following;

  • A number of historic field boundaries and a parish boundary, which may be defined as 'important' under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997 and therefore subject to Statutory protection, lie in the northern part of the site. No other sites with Statutory protection lie within the study area.
  • The sites of six Bronze Age bowl barrows are situated within the study area. Five of these were excavated prior to the construction of the Second World War airfield in 1939, and subsequently destroyed. The sixth no longer survives as an earthwork. There may be some potential for the survival of features associated with these sites.
  • At least two wartime pillboxes are situated within the study area, and a number of original hangers and runways also survive.
  • It is likely further fieldwork investigations will be required as part of the planning process, but at this stage no overriding cultural heritage constraints to development have been identified.
